MAR VISTA CRIME REPORT

Comparing the 2025 crimes in the Mar Vista Community Council area to the 2024 crimes, there has been a 20% decrease across the board (with the exception rape crimes).

With burglaries being a primary issue in the MVCC area, there were 180 reported burglaries in 2025, which was 41 less than 2024. These burglaries included residential burglaries, business burglaries, garage burglaries, and apartment complex lobbies, and apartment complex secured parking garage storage areas. This is also a significant decrease from the 300 burglaries in 2023, the peak of the burglary problem, which was also citywide.

Though it is still a problem, there has been a decrease for the past four years (271 in 2025, 348 in 2024, 398 in 2023, and 485 in 2022.) 71 catalytic converter thefts were reported in 2025, a 26% decrease compared to the 96 in 2024. 291 occurred in 2023. As far as Grand Theft Autos (Stolen Vehicles), looking at the long-term range, from the four years 2021 to 2024, the MVCC area averaged 230 to 245 stolen vehicles per year. Wire theft leaves Mar Vista streets in the dark

Mar Vista neighbors woke up to darkness as the new year started.
Quite a few blocks in Mar Vista are affected by street lamps were damage from wire theft.
Council woman Traci Park and Mar Vista field deputy Matt Holden came out to survey the damage and speak to neighbors. Hopefully they won't be left in the dark too long and the damage will be repaired in a timely manner.

This is such a problem, the Mar Vista wire stealing issue made the news.

License Plate Readers Now in Mar Vista

License Plate Readers Now in Mar Vista

Posted on 01/06/2026

Information about the License Plate Readers from Council Member Traci Park's office:

We spent $450K in discretionary funds to purchase license plate reader (LPR) cameras and pay for data and storage for three years.

After three years, we will need to decide if we want to find funding to continue to pay for data and storage

We’re installing LPRs at 39 locations across CD 11 to create a net of sorts at major thoroughfares and points of ingress and egress

14 LPR cameras are hardwired because of external factors that limit sufficient solar power, 25 LPR are solar powered

Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, and several other cities use Flock cameras, plugging us into a region-wide network

LPRs take a point-in-time image of the rear of vehicles on public roadways.

Images that don’t match a specific search or alert connected to an investigation are never accessed and automatically deleted.

The local agency, not Flock, owns the data gathered by its Flock-powered LPR system. Flock does not sell this customer data to any third parties. Agencies control who they share this data with, when, and can revoke access at any time.

LAPD is in compliance with California Senate Bill 34 – California State Law Governing the use of Automated License Plate Reader Data.

There is Department policy on ALPR Data Retention, access controls, auditing and accountability. All ALPR data captured by the LAPD is owned by LAPD and not shared with any agency outside the State of California, nor is it shared with any Federal Agencies.

LAPD conducts a monthly audit to ensure all ALPR inquiries fall within policy and for transparency, LAPD submits an annual comprehensive technology report to the Police Commission at the beginning of each year.

Crime Trends, News, & Prevention Tips

Crime in October has been low compared to earlier in the year and previous years.

Auto crews are continuing to hit the Westside taking catalytic converters.

They mainly target older vehicles from 2008 to 2012:

• Honda Civics

• Toyota Prius

• Toyota Corollas

It is difficult to protect your vehicle when parked on the street, try to park them in a well-lit area to deter them wanting to be seen. Consider investing in a car cover.

Targeted vehicles are targeted because the catalytic converters can be removed quickly and easily.

If the vehicle is covered, the thieves will not know what vehicle it is.

Drive defensively. Drive safely.  Avoid road rage.

With all the vehicles and traffic and distracted drivers, there is a lot of road rages and traffic accidents.

This includes some busy streets in the Mar Vista Community Council area.   Drive defensively. Drive safely!
